The Atlantic City Boardwalk includes a wide and varied history. The areas first population attended because it offered good food in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. The city grew rapidly but hotel owners were dismayed after they had to continuously clean their lobbies in the sand brought in by the feet from the beach visitors. In an effort to solve the issue, the initial boardwalk appeared in 1870. The city remained popular until increased usage of transportation after WWII encouraged travelers to see other less pricey locations.
